This is the distinction that decides everything.

Inserting the JPG puts a picture into Word. The Hindi is visible but locked. You cannot fix a single मात्रा.

Hindi OCR conversion reads the Devanagari and rebuilds it as Unicode text you can edit, copy and search.

If your goal is editing, only the second option works.

OCR looks at shapes in the image and matches them to characters.

Hindi makes that harder than English. Devanagari letters hang from a connecting line (शिरोरेखा), and matras sit above, below, before or after the consonant.

So the system isn't just reading letters. It's working out how they attach to each other.

• Matras. A small stroke above the line changes क into की or के. Blur that stroke and the word changes meaning.
• Conjuncts. Characters like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र are single visual units built from two letters. Low resolution splits them apart.
• Word boundaries. Hindi spacing can be tight, so words sometimes merge or split during recognition.
• Similar shapes. ब and व, घ and ध, भ and म get confused when edges are soft.

None of this means Hindi OCR doesn't work. It means image quality matters more than it does for English.

3. Devanagari characters are recognized.
4. Paragraphs, headings and structure are detected.
5. Editable Unicode Hindi text is generated.
6. A Word document is created.
7. You review, correct, and download.

Step seven isn't optional. Always proofread Hindi OCR output.

Actual features vary between tools, so check what yours supports.

Good OCR output should be Unicode Hindi, not a legacy font like Kruti Dev.

Unicode text copies correctly, searches properly, and displays the same across Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp and web browsers.

Legacy font text looks fine on one machine and turns into gibberish on another.

Printed scans are the best input. Clean, flat, high contrast.

Hindi books and textbooks convert reliably when scanned properly.

Newspaper clippings are harder. Small type, thin paper, and multi-column layouts all add difficulty.

Screenshots work very well because the text is digitally rendered.

Certificates and forms usually convert the text fine, though decorative fonts and borders cause trouble.

Photos of documents need tight cropping and flat pages.

Handwritten Hindi is the hardest case by far. Expect significant correction.

• Scan rather than photograph whenever possible.
• Use a higher resolution for small Hindi type.
• Crop out desks, hands and page borders.
• Straighten anything tilted before uploading.
• Use even lighting with no glare or shadow.
• Prefer printed Hindi over handwriting for reliability.

Plain paragraphs come through cleanest.

Tables with visible borders survive better than tables spaced with tabs.

Multi-column Hindi pages, especially newspapers, sometimes merge into one flowing block. Text order gets scrambled.

Check tables and columns first when you open the Word file.

For a scanned Hindi document, name your files in page order.

Leading zeros keep page 10 from jumping ahead of page 2.

Whether images combine into one DOCX or produce separate files depends on the tool.

DOC is the older Word format. DOCX is the modern standard.

For Hindi, DOCX is the better choice because it handles Unicode text more dependably across editors.

A browser-based converter works on Android and iPhone without Microsoft Word installed.

Photograph the Hindi page, crop it in your gallery first, then upload.

Cropping before uploading makes a noticeable difference on phone photos.

These steps improve results but can't rescue a badly degraded scan.

Names, dates, numbers and anything official.

Hindi scans often contain certificates, ID documents, land records and personal correspondence.

Read the tool's privacy policy and file-handling details before uploading sensitive material.
