Slanted writing is fine as long as the page itself is upright. Very large writing is fine too.

How image quality changes the result

Low resolution blurs letter edges, and blurred edges are exactly what recognition depends on.

Shadows and glare hide strokes. Heavy JPG compression smears thin pen lines into grey mush.

A curled or tilted page stretches the text lines, which makes line detection harder before a single letter is read.

How to photograph handwritten notes properly

  • Lay the page completely flat.
  • Use even, indirect light. No flash glare, no hard shadows.
  • Hold the camera parallel to the page, directly above it.
  • Keep the whole page in frame with a small margin.
  • Tap to focus and check for blur before you move on.
  • Crop out the desk, your fingers, and anything else in the shot.
  • Keep the text upright, not sideways or upside down.

Dark ink on white paper gives the strongest contrast. Pencil on cream paper gives the weakest.

Scanning instead

A flatbed scan usually beats a phone photo. Lighting is even, the page is pressed flat, and there's no perspective distortion.

What happens to formatting

Text lines and paragraph breaks usually carry over. Your handwriting style, spacing, and margins do not.

The Word file uses a standard font. Recognition produces text, not a visual copy of your page.
