HEIC Format: Apple's High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a file format that uses HEVC (H.265) video compression to store still images. Apple adopted HEIC as the default camera format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in 2017. HEIC files are 30-50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality.
HEIC containers can store multiple images (burst shots, Live Photos), depth maps, and alpha channels. For OCR conversion, Convert JPG to Word extracts the primary image from the HEIC container and decodes the HEVC-compressed pixel data.
HEIC Compatibility and Conversion Challenges
- macOS/iOS: Native support. Photos app opens HEIC directly.
- Windows 10/11: Requires HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store ($0.99) for preview. Our converter handles HEIC without this extension.
- Web Browsers: Safari supports HEIC. Chrome and Firefox do not display HEIC natively.
- OCR Quality: HEIC's HEVC compression preserves text edges better than JPEG DCT encoding, producing 2-4% better OCR accuracy.
